This type of investigation is called a\u00a0site investigation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">Additionally,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Geotechnical investigations<\/b><\/span>\u00a0are also used to measure the\u00a0thermal resistivity\u00a0of soils or backfill materials required for underground transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines, radioactive waste disposal, and solar thermal storage facilities. A geotechnical investigation will include surface exploration and subsurface exploration of a site. Sometimes,\u00a0geophysical methods\u00a0are used to obtain data about sites. Subsurface exploration usually involves soil sampling and laboratory tests of the soil samples retrieved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">Surface exploration can include\u00a0geologic mapping, geophysical methods, and\u00a0photogrammetry, or it can be as simple as a geotechnical professional walking around on the site to observe the physical conditions at the site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">To obtain information about the soil conditions below the surface, some form of subsurface exploration is required.
